Subject: Thought I heard that KC
This show was recommended to me several times – with the caveat of problematic sources – before I settled down with it. To "get" this show you have to go to the right AUD and adjust the pitch & EQ (other sources do not read accurately) and it will reveal. Yes, 12/28 is the best show of the month, but this has an immersively entertaining second set. This night was added to the end of the tour after the previous night sold out. We find Jer in a mood for single-note solos and an aggressive tone, Brent stretching his (new) wings, and some unique jams.
First Set. Jack Straw abruptly jumps to high gear, with an angry tone. Bobby jokes "welcome to the late show" – possibly because this was an added show, but I bet this confused a lot of Heads. While waiting, Phil says "Hey Brent, play a little bit". He does – for a few secs. That angry tone makes this a somewhat unique Loser; it's followed by an uptempo Me & My Uncle. The rest is average '79, save for a thumping, snarling Minglewood (KC girls/T for KC) that will be the subject of your letters home. Althea is a bit of a struggle, but Jer takes a different approach at one point (@7>8½mins), then repeats the bridge + last verse (like a couple other late '79s). There's an early arrangement of Easy to Love You, and though China Cat isn't the tightest, the "angry" tone is kewl. Jer has a weird attack again on Rider, and stuff gets out of order [Jer adds a solo in the middle of troubles away>wish I was a headlight, then almost repeats the chorus instead]. It's half trainwreck/half great, but you do get three solos and it's worth hearing once for the uniqueness.
Second Set. They come back ready to shake 'em on down with Shakedown. Gods this is good. And Samson is so raucous and tight (the last bit is missing from most sources). Ship of Fools has sort of an odd middle, albeit extended, as Jer fiddles about, making it one of the [the?] longest, @9:56. Terrapin has some nice sections. Lost Sailor is tight, sweet (if not necessarily unique). There's a full stop and then, to start Saint, they gradually build a jam made of the outro. It's a very GD moment. After a very solid version of the main song they drift again, into a jazzy Saint Jam [not an "Estimated jam" as sometimes listed]. BTW, this 12: 44 Saint is also one of the longest. Brent stays out awhile for Drums. Another long intro introduces Not Fade Away, the tempo sludging a bit. Black Peter is sharp, exacting, plus Jer pushes back to a better tempo. The rest leaves 'em very happy for the lots, with a rapid-take Alabama and a high-flying Promised Land (miller_103092 SBD useable here). Note that Phil has been inspired enough by this set to come out and thank the Heads.
1st Set: C+
2nd Set: A-
Overall = 4 stars
Highlights:
Jack Straw – jumps to high gear
New Minglewood Blues – thumping, snarling
Second Set – almost the whole set
SOURCES: There are no "press play" sources. The only SBD is a reference tape made for Brent, and it's missing other band members for most of the show and therefore unusable (until partway in the second set it's mostly just Bobby's vox & Brent's keys, and most sources run 1% fast). A matrix doesn't cure these ills but you can check mtx_haugh-miller_92439. It does have some longer tunings, but the end of Samson is edited, as it is on SBDs. It's a tad slow, needing +1% pitch correction. Most of the AUDs are likewise temperamental. The 128800_naks_mason is in mono and runs too fast. The walker-scotton_miller_89166 is the best source, though tunings and patter have been cut, the BAL swims a little and it needs big EQ. The channels are switched and it needs pitch correction of +1.5% for the first two songs and +1% for the rest. Coddle these issues and you're golden.
